Candy, the book, was not protected by U.S. copyright. Consequently, although it was a best-seller, the authors received no royalties. In order for the authors to make any money from the project, the race was on between the authors and the publisher (Maurice Girodias) to secure the copyright. Lawsuits emerged in both France and the U.S. Haley Mills (teen star of The Parent Trap) was cast on the Southern/Hoffenberg sidebut Girodias did a secret deal with Christian Marquand and Marlon Brandowhich blew the Mills plan out of the water.
Unfortunately, as Terry often lamented "the quintessential American roleshe has GOT to be American" became a vehicle for Miss Teenage Sweden, Ewa Aulin.
